Palmer
Palmer, Alaska is located 42 miles northeast of Anchorage on the Glenn Highway. The city is one of the few in Alaska to have developed from an agricultural base. In 1935, as one of Roosevelt’s New Deal projects, 203 families arrived from the northern US to receive 40 acre lots in the Palmer area. The failure rate was high, but some descendants of the original settlers remain in Palmer. The city retains its agricultural roots as host of the Alaska State Fair each year.
